Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment Mississauga

When the inner nerve of a tooth becomes affected by decay or infection, root canal therapy (endodontic) may become a necessary form of treatment.

In order to save the structure of the tooth, your dentist will remove the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth) and clean the inside of your tooth. The only purpose of the nerve is to provide sensory experience; and its removal will not affect the normal function of your tooth. This space is then sealed with special materials, in order to prevent further damage. Your dentist then restores the outside of your tooth so it will function properly and have a healthy appearance.

Saving the natural tooth is usually the best option, so root canal treatment is generally the treatment of choice. Many times, extraction (pulling a tooth) is not the right answer, as it can cause costly dental problems in the surrounding teeth and tissues.

Root canal therapy has demonstrated great success and generally lasts a lifetime. However, some teeth will have to be retreated if new infections arise.

Signs that you need root canal therapy:

  • Experiencing swelling, tenderness or abscess (or pimple) on the gums.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold, as well as severe pain.
  • No symptoms are present at initial stages.

When root canal therapy is necessary:

  • Decay has reached the tooth pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth).
  • Infection or abscess have developed inside the tooth or at the root tip.
  • Injury or trauma to the tooth.

Root Canal

How is root canal treatment done?

Root canal procedures involve at least one appointment (or more) with your dentist or endodontist (a root canal specialist).

Once the tooth is numb, a rubber sheet is placed surrounding the tooth in order eliminate saliva and keep the area dry. An opening is created on top of the tooth permitting root canal files to be placed and the living tissue, bacteria, and nerve to be removed with special dental instruments. If there is tooth decay present, it will be removed as well.

Once the tooth is cleansed, a permanent filling will be placed to seal the opening. If additional visits are necessary (a week later), a temporary filling will be issued until the next appointment. During the second appointment, the same procedure will occur. All teeth receiving root canal treatment will also need a dental crown mounted for protection and to prevent the tooth from possible breakage. Following the procedure, the tooth may be sensitive; however, this will subside as the tooth heals and the inflamed area fades.

You will be given care instructions after each appointment. In order to keep your teeth healthy and functional, it is important that you maintain proper oral hygiene and attend regularly scheduled dental appointments.
