Crowns (Caps)
A crown (or cap) is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. Your dentists will most likely recommend a crown to restore full function back into the tooth.
Compared to different types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most widely used today. Crowns are very durable and can last a lifetime. However, like most dental restorations, they may need to be replaced at some point. Thankfully with the advancement of porcelain materials; dental crowns are made to match the shape, color and durability of your teeth, making your smile bright and natural.
Post And CoreCrowns (Caps)
During Root Canal Treatment (RCT), your dentist will reinforce the tooth before installing the crown. As the nerve and blood vessels are removed from the channel in the middle of each root, the tooth will gradually become weaker over time. Fracture and the risks of losing teeth is greater.
When the dental crown is more intact, a prefabricated titanium post bonded into the space is enough to provide support. In cases where the tooth has a significant amount of decay, fracture or is heavily restored, a post and core may be a durable and the best option to strengthen the tooth before crown placement.
The post and core procedure can be done in two appointments. The dentist will remove any decayed and damaged tooth material, as well as existing restoration that are part of the bare portion of the tooth. The dentist will carefully make a channel or post hole (10mm deep) in the center of the tooth, by removing some of the RCT sealer. Next, an impression of the post hole and the remaining tooth structure will be taken, and sent to the lab. After this is accomplished, a temporary crown is placed on top for preparation. In 7-10 days, the patient will come back to our dental office, and have the custom fabricated post and core attached into place.
After post and core is completed, preparation is done during the same visit in order to speed up the process.
Fixed Bridges Mississauga
Fixed bridges is a (non – removable) device that can be a convenient way to restore your smile when you have one or more missing teeth.
Although there are several types of bridges, your dentist will determine which option is right for you. Porcelain fixed bridges are most popular because they resemble the look and feel of your natural teeth. This type of bridge is attached to two crowns, which fit over the existing teeth and hold the bridge in place.
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last for many years. However, they may need to be replaced or retightened due to normal wear.
Why do I need a fixed bridge?
- Restore your smile by filling the gap left by missing teeth.
- Support the facial tissues.
- Prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.
- Restore the ability to chew and speak naturally.
- Remain in place as you eat, speak and sleep – just like natural teeth.
How is a bridge attached?
The process of getting a bridge generally consists of two or more visits. First, the dentist will numb the tooth to remove the decay around it. At that time, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. An accurate impression of your teeth will be taken, and sent to the dental lab. Next, a temporary bridge will be fitted onto the tooth, (worn for several weeks) before your next appointment.
At your next visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the tooth will be cleaned. Finally, your new permanent bridge will be fitted, checked and adjusted to fit your mouth. Once completed, special attention to hygiene at home will need to be taken, especially flossing under the bridge.
